NI Razor is a totally different beast, this amazing additive synthesizer allows you to create complex and especially unique refreshing sounds using just sine waves. First let’s dive in to the main controls and concepts so that we have a clear understanding of what this synth can do. Additive synthesis is very different from all the other forms of sound design since it uses only sine waves to build more complex waves.

This tutorial,  walks you through a features overview of the new synth – Kontour, a new Reaktor Ensemble in Komplete 10. Kontour has to be one of the more unique synths I’ve ever used. It was created by Stephan Schmitt, the founder of Native Instruments, and it is a really unique take on synthesis. It is marketed as a very expressive synth that is a sound designers dream, and I gotta say, it really is! Kontour is essentially a phase modulation synth. So it sounds a little like an FM styled synth. However, it does not use operators and ratios, it does come equipped with two oscillators. The Oscillators in Native Instruments Kontour are generating sine waves. These then run through a pair of Sine Shaper distortion modules to help beef up the sound. Those then go out to two different filters, a Comb Filter and a State Variable Filter.

In this video I show how to emulate the NES pulse channel, which is responsible for many of the system’s most iconic sounds effects, from the Galaga-style sounds previewed at the beginning of the video, to the jump and fireball sound effects from Super Mario Brothers.

While genre does not affect many mixing techniques, EDM (electronic dance music) has unique challenges. Artists want their songs to sound loud, wide, and heavy, without suppressing their unique texture or competing with the underlying rhythm. In this course, Colin Fisher teaches advanced mixing techniques specifically suited to the EDM environment. He’ll touch on loudness and dynamics, headroom and gain, and processing with compression, limiting, and clipping, as well as show how to manipulate stereo and frequency placement like the pros do. The end result is a fat, wide, and full sound that will help your tracks break through.
