    The DX7 and FM synthesis – in their days – opened up a new horizon. Together with subtractive synthesis and sampling technology, FM was the most important development in synthesizer history. Neither VCO nor VCA that came with analogue machines provided comparable results. In 1983 when everyone seemed to own a Yamaha DX7, Frequency Modulation, as a concept, was the next step, redefined what a synthesizer could sound like, redefined the whole synthesizer market.

Their exuberance and precision make it difficult to find out, they are not played by strings the time you press your keys. The classical orchestra is your E-mu sampler.
