Back in June this year a very special guest came to Bristol to give a long awaited talk… Matt Quinn, also known as the mighty Optical – one of the most respected audio engineers in electronic music, full stop. With his work ranging from breaking new ground via his LP with Ed Rush -‘Wormhole’ to engineering and composing for Goldie’s ‘Saturnz Return’ and also co-writing the Album ‘Mysteries of Funk’ with Grooverider. The alluring aspect of his style is that his engineering skills are equally matched by his sense of artistry, seamlessly woven together to give the distinct, precise and vibrant sound that his music is know for – the world over. In this masterclass Optical looks at all angles of his production skills, and uses two tracks (forthcoming from the new Ed Rush & Optical LP) to demonstrate this, as well as a world exclusive dub he had been working on just for the seminar. Tutorials simply don’t get any more exciting!!!

Created in close collaboration with Doepfer, the creators and original stewards of the Eurorack modular synth standard, Softube Modular gives you the sound, the freedom, and the expandability of a hardware modular synthesizer, without the constraints. Seven essential component-modeled Doepfer modules are included, plus 50 stock modules, from utilities like mixers and multipliers to sequencers and performance panels. And premium modules from other renowned hardware brands are available to expand your collection. So dive in, and explore a new sonic frontier where anything is possible, and you never run out of patch cables.
Taking inspiration from a classic Japanese synth, Intellijel Korgasmatron II is a dual voltage controlled filter which can also be used as a limited oscillator. Any sound passed through it comes out richer, more nuanced, more fiesty and colorful, largely due to the distortion characteristics of the resonant drive controls on each filter, and the fact that you can modulate and blend between two bold filters on settings as widely divergent as you like. Fire it up in Softube Modular and start producing magic, from classic MS-20 type sounds to totally new territory.

APU TrueGain is a powerful utility plugin which corrects for a fundamental challenge in audio engineering: a mix’s tonal balance changes depending on the listening level. By modeling the human ear’s frequency sensitivity at different Sound Pressure Levels (SPL), TrueGain allows you to audition and control your audio with perceptual consistency. The core of TrueGain is its ability to perform “translation checks.” After a simple one-time calibration to your monitoring setup, you can use TrueGain to simulate how your mix will sound at different loudness levels, all without changing the actual volume of your monitors or headphones. This allows you to quickly check how the bass will hold up or if the vocals will become harsh in quieter listening environments, ensuring your mix translates reliably.
