The theremin is an electronic instrument patented in 1928 by Leon Theremin. The typical theremin users two oscillators – one producing a static frequency, one variable – and amplifies the difference of these two signals to produce sine waves at different frequencies, thus creating different pitches. A theremin uses a secondary circuit to control amplitude. You can control pitch/volume with your hands by adjusting the position of your hands in relation to the two antennas of the theremin, thus making it one of the only instruments in the world that you play but never touch! The tone of the theremin is well known, and can be heard in countless horror scores because of its somewhat unnatural and haunting tone. Theoretically, a theremin produces a fundamental pitch as a pure sine wave, and pure sine waves sound unnatural because most sounds in nature come with magesy overtones. The theremin is considered to be one of the worlds most challenging instruments to play. Not only is a theremin “fretless” like a violin, but even stringless, and the tone it produces is not stopped by inaction or through natural decay, but rather by manually decreasing the volume. In other words, to produces staccato notes, one must control not only the attack and hold, but also the decay. This is counterintuitive to how almost every other instrument works.

Content: All phrases were played by experienced studio musicians with no midi usage or quantization, keeping the groove and essence as natural as possible. Not only were all phrases recorded with three different sounds but each phrase also features two slightly different parameter settings on its respective stereo channels, making it possible to modify the sound even more: By adjusting the pan on a mono channel you can morph between the two variations of a phrase to alter it to your demands. This makes Synthlines a perfect match for when you need a fat bassline or a cool lead for your production. Thanks to the Elastik engine, the key, tempo, pitch, or formant of whole melodies or single notes can be manipulated to the extreme, providing a huge playground for sound-fanatics. AIRFLOW, VIBRATION AND INTIMACY

We have never heard and played such an instrument before. It sounds very organic, very lively and above all very unique. It sounds like airflow, vibration and intimacy. But if you take a closer look at Luft and see what the original sound sources are, with which Luft assembles its sound, it’s not really surprising! Luft is based exclusively on simple aerophonic instruments. They are all instruments that produce their sound through a stream of air that flows through a vibrating reed or over an opening. Summarizing: Luft consists only of airflow instruments. There are a total of 34 individual airflow instruments, which can be divided into 6 categories: fan or pump organs, blown keyboards like harmonicas and melodicas, simple flutes and a church organ with several individual registers. But there are also other, less common sounds like a water bottle, a hand pipe, a pipe – or a nose flute or a kazou. Some sounds were resampled over an old tape machine which gives them the sound of a Mellotron which charmingly complements the overall sound palette of Luft.
