On the front cover this month we have KORG’s recreation of the ARP Odyssey. Not satisfied with remaking their own classics, Korg have reissued this revered duophonic analogue synth. We find out how it stacks up against the original. For Inside Track this month, we talk to Björk and collaborators Chris Elms, Arca and The Haxan Cloak about her latest album, Vulnicura. We also look behind the production of the Arctic Monkeys’ modern classic ‘I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor’. We also review Akai Professional’s new flagship Ableton controller, the APC40 MkII, Apple Logic Pro 10.1, the sE Electronics Rupert Neve-designed RE17 small diaphragm condenser, Modartt Pianoteq 5, iZotopeRX4, the new Korg Electribe, the Audio-Technica UK AT4060A valve mic, and much more.
On the front cover this month is Cubase 8, the latest version of Steinberg’s DAW software which incorporates powerful tools from Nuendo, and features such as VCA faders and the ability to render audio in place. You can’t seem to go anywhere at the moment without hearing Hozier’s commercial breakthrough ‘Take Me To Church’. In our Inside Track feature this month, we interview producer Rob Kirwan and discover that it was a focus on the track’s least commercial elements that helped make it a hit. We also find out about how the Fall made their ‘Hit The North’ in Classic Tracks, and talk to live sound engineer Bob Pridden about working with The Who.
On the front cover this month is SSL’s new 24-channel mixer, the XL-Desk. Marketed as ‘the smart, dumb analogue console’ the XL-Desk sports eight mic preamps, four mix buses and can host up to 16 500-series modules, but lacks DAW control or fader automation. Technical Editor Hugh Robjohns takes it for a spin. It’s all about mix engineers in our features this month. We talk rock mixing with Tom Lord-Alge, and interview David Wrench, the mixer behind FKA Twigs, Jungle and Caribou. Then in our video this month, we catch up with Grammy-Award winner Andrew Scheps about getting started in the industry, compression and how not to get kicked off a session (available on iPad and via our YouTube channel).
Want cuts on your beats but dont have a dj rig? Let alone be actually good enough to do anything worth keeping. Now you can play custom scratches with your existing midi keyboard or pads with vsdj. Over 300 patches covering a wide range of styles and techniques, in addition to the large scratch library there are also a large amount of utility type presets to aid you in your productions as well. And while this plugin in no way replaces the traditional ways of attaining custom scratch phrases, it is the next best thing. Odds are no one will even be able to tell the difference haha.
Christmas is one of nicest holidays in the year. In some lands, it is in this season that snow and frost come, in others heat or rain rule. But every Christian land on earth people decorate little trees which are the main visual symbol of Christmas. A lot of Christmas frills, decorative chains, candles and big stars are put on the Christmas tree. And it was this star which inspired me to create small sound library, WSM Imagination, for you, the subscribers of WS magazine. You can immerse yourself in unknown worlds, full of stars, nebulae and planets, and leave your imagination to levitate in a deluge of atmospheric sounds which this sound library offers. Also, the skin which comes with this sound library is in a lustrous blue color to even more inspire your imagination when you listen its presets. I did not have much time to create a totally new skin, so I modified the skin of Mistral, but I hope that you will like this skin.
