I found this old, unused mandolin, hanging on a wall in a dark corner of my cellar. I bought it about 10 years ago in a local music store. I played it for some time, but then turned to another instruments and good old mandolin got down there. When I saw it after such a long time I knew immediately, that its time has come again. The result is a mandolinesque experimental library, what is emphasized by quite a lot of percussive sounds I got from its body, neck, strings beating and knocking them with my hands. Old Mandolin already in its first edition was not meant to be an exact sonic portrait of this instrument. As the title “Old Mandolin” implies, the goal was capturing the instrument with its flaws and imperfections to maintain its organic value, unpredictability and obscurity. Rubbed off frets, tuning issues and “not that great sound” really would not compete for more, but there are always more angles to take the view from.

The bawu is a Chinese wind instrument. Although shaped like a flute, it is actually a free reed instrument, with a single metal reed. It is played in a transverse (horizontal) manner. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre and its playing technique incorporates the use of much ornamentation, particularly bending tones. The bawu likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China. It has become a standard instrument throughout China, used in modern Chinese compositions for traditional instrument ensembles. Although the bawu is still predominantly performed in China, it has in recent years been adopted by European composers and performers. Rohan Leach from England, Raphael De Cock from Belgium, and Herman Witkam from the Netherlands have all taken the instrument in new directions. The musician Guo Yue, who now resides in England, has long promoted the instrument and plays it on all of his recordings.

The Uilleann Pipes are the national bagpipe instrument of Ireland. It’s unusual and complex one in its construction, requiring from a player quite a bit of mastership. With this library – a complicated instrument like the Uilleann Pipes – now becomes easy available to anybody! In our library we sampled two full octaves for the chanter – main instrument’s reed, including fast and slow legato notes, as well as other articulation like vibrato, staccato and mordents. The legato speed can be control in three ways – through a keyswitch, midi-controller or velocity sensitivity. Another outstanding feature of the library – a special range on keyboard for playing regulators and regulators’ chords like a real bagpiper usually does it with his wrist accompanying chanter’s melody with simple harmonic backing. But for you it will be no intricacy – just use your left hand like on a piano.
