Several decades ago (1985 to be precise), a certain Japanese manufacturer released their JX8P which did ok. A year or so later, they brought out their JX10P quickly followed by the rack mount MKS70 ‘Super JX’ MIDI module… Fabulous synths and up there with the company’s legendary Jupiter 8. Ok … this new breed used digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs). Nothing to concerned about – not digital oscillators but analogue just controlled digitally for better tuning stability … but otherwise all analogue through and through. And it sounds mighty. We’ve extensively multi-sampled the raw waveforms from subsonic, clicking lows to tweeter worrying highs and the samples are long – up to a minute each for some – so that they can breathe. The waveforms are quirky which add to the character of the original instruments as well as the sample set.

The filters, waveforms, chorusing, brightness and more have all been captured using permutative technique, allowing the user to focus the sound directly on individual parameter settings – much like one would do with the original analog model. Don?t let the single instrument or 8 Macros fool you. Synth700 is actually quite complex. There are over 256 individual parameter configurations based on what you dial in on the Macro controls. When recording a Rhodes piano, nearly all, (or all?), instruments that has been recorded for a sampled instrument are lined. That means that you take the signal from the instrument, and feed it directly to the recording device. This means that you will get a very clean, bright signal. And that is, in itself, a good thing! The Mk I Seventy-Three has no less then 16 different velocity samples/note and this gives you the dynamic response that’s not found on any other sampled Rhodes. Add to this 16 matching release samples and you’ll have 32 samples/note!
