Octopus is a “Dual-Matrix” synthesizer containing one Matrix for Oscillator/Filter frequency modulation synthesis and another Matrix for general modulation. Octopus features 8 additive Oscillators, a Sampler and a powerful approach to modulation – 32 complex multi-purpose envelopes with a wide range of modulation destinations. The key component for building a sound is the instrument’s 8 oscillators, Sampler, 2 filters and 32 envelopes. These components allow you to create anything from classic “old school” FM timbres to complex sounds far beyond those possible with conventional FM synthesis. All controls are located on a single panel which is always on view, so you can see at a glance any synth parameter.

Nostromos is a cinematic plugin instrument featuring 1.1 gig of sampled sounds. The plugin has 80 playable instruments and a easy to use interface. Each sound can be modified using a series of simple parameters. The sounds range from epic ambient pads to organic “mutant” textures, ethereal tones to mystic bells.

With a name like Retro Cazio, it probably won’t come as any great surprise to learn that SampleScience’s new free plugin emulates an old-school Casio keyboard. Specifically, we’re talking about the MT-100, a 1983 model that generated its sounds using the NEC D931 chip. This was very much an entry-level home keyboard, which explains the 20 toy-like sounds that Retro Cazio includes. There’s also a single drum kit, along with a multi-LFO, high-pass/low-pass filter, reverb, glide, an ADSR envelope and a choice of three voice modes (polyphonic, legato and mono).

What do you need to do when you have two audio sources, with similar spectral content, and you would like to mix them in a balanced way so that each of the individual parts can be heard? Normally you may spend hours fiddling with the EQ of each source to find the dominant spectral components. Having done this you then need to tweak each EQ until a suitable balance is reached. All the time being sure that a constant volume is achieved. Using the similar, innovative, communicating plug-in technology used in Clone Boy, Space Boy makes it possible to perform this, normally complex, EQ process in a matter of minutes using just a few sliders. Space Boy, as the name suggests, provides the means to analyse, in real-time, the spectrum of one audio source and make a ‘space’ in the spectrum of another (target) audio source. Not only this, but the ever changing relationship between the different EQs of each source is automatically accommodated in real-time. This means that EQ adjustments are made only when needed.

Albedo is a granular cloud reverb effect plugin. It constantly records incoming audio into a buffer, and at the same time runs up to 64 individual looping playheads – called grains – scattered within this buffer. All grains have their own random size and position, and as they are overlaid together, a lush “cloud of sound” effect is produced. Thanks to dual envelope generators per grain, playback speed has continuous adjustment with perfectly smooth transitions between forward and reverse directions – enabling live audio manipulation much like on a tape machine or a turntable, including a fully stopped state. With a flexible multi-mode filter before the buffer recording stage, as well synchronous grain speed and size modulation, Albedo is capable of a truly vast variety of effects: from melting pitch shifts and chaotic reversed delays, to chorus atmospheres and dark grimy dissonance.
