Penny is the third release in our Drums Series and arguably the most vibey and versatile thus far. We initially sought to create a kit that paid homage to the tighter rock drum mixes popularized in the 60’s and 70’s. We covered the toms and snare with cloth to dampen the decay/ring-out and incorporated some vintage mics used in that period alongside our modern array of microphones and gear. After curating a kit with some beautiful and rare custom pieces, extensively sampling each drum, mixing the snot out of it and programming Penny to a tee – what we end up with is an instrument that suits far more musical contexts than we initially anticipated. Pretty cool stuff. As per usual, we incorporated our repetition sampling techniques for realistic successive notes with the hi-hats and toms and six different hi-hat groove states that you can easily crossfade between for maximum expression.

Aleatoric Rhythms is a bold new instrument that uses sounds from synthesizers and real life recordings. Sounds vary from nasty bass riffs to sneaky and immersive percussion loops. Recorded with a portable studio microphone, the sounds were captured in real environments – the exact environments, sometimes clever and sometimes nasty, that the loops want to portray. The sounds dear to be different and are meant to give immediate inspiration together with their powerful engine. This ensures that you will stand out from the crowd and immerse listeners into your work. The Aleatoric Rhythms engine is easy to use, but can give rich and complex outcomes. Aleatoric Rhythms contains four individually adjustable sample sources, each housing an abundance of fully modulatable parameters. The ‘Source Movement’ & ‘Filter Movement’ manipulation pads makes your score come alive and move with the picture. For more creative options, the single loops are made available for you to use in your DAW. These wave files are also categorized and named to carry all relevant information about key, bpm and length.

The Viola da Gamba is a 6-stringed bowed and fretted instrument that first appeared in Spain in the mid to late 15th century and was most popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Viola da Gamba was recorded at the MGM Scoring Stage in Los Angeles. This instrument is strung with 6 gut strings that are tuned to (relative to Kontakt): D1, G1, C2, E2, A2, and D3. Viols are fretted in a manner similar to early guitars or lutes, by means of movable wrapped-around and tied-on gut frets. The movable nature of the tied-on frets permits the viol player to make adjustments to the tempering of the instrument.  On this particular instrument, the frets only extend 7 semi-tones on each string.

The haunting sounds of the Hammond Novachord have always intrigued us here at HS Towers. Made from over a hundred valves, thousands of capacitors and miles of hand sewn wiring looms and built in 1939, it was several decades ahead of its time … the world’s first polyphonic synthesiser housed in a beautiful, cherrywood cabinet… And it had a sound all its own. Its ‘Is it an organ or not … so what is it?” sounds and its creepy tones have graced many an old movie to great effect and indeed, our own Novachord library has been used in many productions including the award winning ‘Alan Wake’ game scored by Petri Alanko so we thought it might be nice if we did a ‘lite’ version so that others can enjoy this unique sound.
