A chaotic drum machine for a chaotic world

Part two of the Modular Chaos Engine and I’m very excited to introduce my first fully electronic instrument. It’s probably fairly obvious by the blueness and the title that I’ve exploited the strange and rather wonderful qualities of Dave Smiths’ criminally underated analog/digital masterpiece the Evolver. I LOVE this underdog synth, mainly because it has so much wonky personality and a wonderful, slightly mad architecture that can produce some really great sounds….usually of a highly boisterous nature. So, for this Chaos Engine there are up to 127 different sounds/articulations per key which are very loosely mapped across the keys from from low kick drum type sounds through snappy snare type sounds up to more clicky, rattly hats and then the mildly melodic sounds up near the top end of the key range.

The Rathgar Pipe Organ is a beautifully sampled library that captures the authentic sound of the 100 plus years old organ from the Christ Chuch Rathgar, in the south of Dublin, Ireland. This unique library captures with detail all the character and nuance of this historical instrument. Preserving all the natural imperfections and all acoustic interactions of the sound of the organ in the church, bringing life to the instrument. This collection of pianos offers you the right piano for every situation in everyday studio life and, with its clever processing options, is sure to provide the right piano sound for your music. The piano set consists of 4 different pianos: Walnut (typical sound), Felt, Peculiar (a special and unique sound), and Cologne (an experimental sound). We recorded all articulations as elaborately as possible with many different microphone setups, from complex setups with stereo tube microphones/large condenser/ribbon microphones to stereo coles pairs, small condensers in the bottom and contact microphones. We then incorporated the best three results per articulation into the respective piano. We enhanced each piano with sophisticated processing options, ranging from simple EQs and filters to resonance reverbs, compressors, reverse sounds, and a granular machine.
