The theremin is an electronic instrument patented in 1928 by Leon Theremin. The typical theremin users two oscillators – one producing a static frequency, one variable – and amplifies the difference of these two signals to produce sine waves at different frequencies, thus creating different pitches. A theremin uses a secondary circuit to control amplitude. You can control pitch/volume with your hands by adjusting the position of your hands in relation to the two antennas of the theremin, thus making it one of the only instruments in the world that you play but never touch! The tone of the theremin is well known, and can be heard in countless horror scores because of its somewhat unnatural and haunting tone. Theoretically, a theremin produces a fundamental pitch as a pure sine wave, and pure sine waves sound unnatural because most sounds in nature come with magesy overtones. The theremin is considered to be one of the worlds most challenging instruments to play. Not only is a theremin “fretless” like a violin, but even stringless, and the tone it produces is not stopped by inaction or through natural decay, but rather by manually decreasing the volume. In other words, to produces staccato notes, one must control not only the attack and hold, but also the decay. This is counterintuitive to how almost every other instrument works.

Who can deny the impact of Paul McCartney’s melodic mastery, Bill Wyman’s thud-like blues rhythms or John Entwistle’s ferocious escapes on the fretboard? In many ways, the ‘British Invasion’ era didn’t just redefine the role of the bass player in a band but also the bass guitar as something much more than merely a frequency in the back of the mix. Now, it was okay with a bass growling, distorting or recklessly gobbling up mouthfuls of prime mix real estate. In other words, the bass finally got its due. This EZbass MIDI pack was recorded in tandem with the British Invasion MIDI packs for drums and EZkeys but should at the same time be considered as something that stands firmly on its own. Expect solid basslines and melodic hooks – all inspired by the time when not only Britain conquered the airwaves but very much so also the bass. Let the bass invasion begin!

Korg Universe Volume 1 is from the German company Back in Time Records who specialise in the production of sample CD’s of older classic synths, we have also reviewed Minimoog Classics and Korg Universe Volume 2. Korg Universe 1 is the companion volume to Volume 2 and covers the sounds produced from 17 Korg synthesisers and drum machines, from classic mono synths like the 700S to the Wavestation AD. There is no duplication with Volume 2 and I’d find it hard to think of anything produced by Korg in the 1970-91 period that isn’t covered by one of these sample CD’s.
