From this dungeon-like place – brimming with tape machines, old tube gear and vintage instruments – Konie has been churning out productions bursting with his signature stripe of analog character for the likes of Refused and Tribulation, to name a few. With a collection of David’s own drums, the studio’s and those of bands and friends on the Stockholm scene, they made sure this EZX had four distinctly unique kits, each bringing its niched sound and vibe to the project. Expect a broad palette of scarred, road worn and tried-and-true kits all put through the paces on anything from big festival stages and underground club stages to a wealth of albums of all styles.

This EZX for EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3 features a collection of unique kits from the mid-1900s era, each handpicked to create the best mix of earthy, organic, resonant and vivid sounds for anything from acoustic pop to edgy soul, R&B and any tight-sounding pocket-style beats. It was recorded by engineer/producer/mixer Christoffer Berg (Depeche Mode, The Knife, Fever Ray) and drummer Christopher Cantillo (Carly Rae Jepsen, Mayer Hawthorne, Dina Ögon) at the famed Svenska Grammofonstudion (SGS) in Gothenburg, Sweden. With its main live room boasting an impressive 10-meter ceiling height but still with a very contained ambience, it was the perfect choice for an EZX that set out to capture drums tight enough for any contemporary beats but still projecting enough air in the room to retain that natural timeless vintage timbre of the drums. The kits were recorded using the obligatory close mics as well as two different mid/side configurations – one featuring all-ribbon mics and one where only tube mics were used. To enhance the vintage flair and period-correct vibes of the kits themselves even more, prominently calf- and cowskin heads were used, giving you that uniquely thick, lush, warm, yet-ringy, old-school sound unlike that of any modern-day alternatives.

New Orleans v1.0.0 EZX

If you’re chasing the soul of drumming, all roads lead to New Orleans. This is the city where the drum kit as we know it was born, where jazz and funk first took shape and where rhythm has never been just a musical element – it’s the living pulse woven over centuries by African, Caribbean, French and Creole traditions, merging into that magical heartbeat we call groove. For this EZX, we traveled there to capture an all-encompassing drum library under the supervision of one of the city’s foremost experts on drumming, gear and groove: Terence Higgins (Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen Brass Band). The New Orleans EZX was sampled by Terence Higgins himself and recorded by multi-award-winning engineer, producer and mixer Misha Kachkachishvili at his Esplanade Studios, one of the absolute hubs of today’s New Orleans recording circuit. Located in the vibrant Tremé neighborhood and housed in a completely remodeled 14,000-square-foot early 1900s church, it’s the largest recording studio in Louisiana. The main recording room in Studio A alone boasts a staggering 3,400-square-foot space with ceilings up to 26 feet high. Naturally, the ambience is awe-inspiring. For this recording, however, the drums were partially sectioned off using gobos to create a lively yet viscerally close feel.
