Basic rock grooves in close to any time signature imaginable.

By the end of the 1960s and continuing well into the late ’70s, bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Kansas, Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Genesis and Styx were in the vanguard of a musical shift in rock. Suddenly, uncommon time signatures, long solos, technical passages, dragged-out instrumental parts and lyrical themes out of this world not only became common but largely accepted even on a commercial scale. In short: the prog rock scene that rose during this period applied extra everything – to everything. Maybe so the most in terms of drums. To this day, the timeless chops of Neil Peart, Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Alan White and many others continue to inspire and set the bar. In the wake of this musical overthrow and inspired by the iconic drummers of the era, the Seventies Prog Grooves MIDI pack takes off. But although this collection of MIDI offers its fair share of technicality, the main idea behind it was to keep it plain, simple and easy to understand.

This collection of MIDI is a homage not only to the music but also the bands, the drummers and the dedication that goes into perfecting the craft of playing at the very apex of what’s humanly possible – and still make every note count and be there for a reason. “In this MIDI pack, I tried to cover more of an aggressive side of the fusion genre,” says drummer Luke Oswald. “I pulled ideas from drummers whose styles fit within the fusion label but who also have more of a progressive temperament to their playing. You’ll get all the fusion elements, such as linear- and rudimental-based playing, but you’ll find everything has more edge to it. I even introduced some double bass drum work, which is new compared to the earlier MIDI packs I’ve done.”

The Progressive EZX features a custom selection of content from The Progressive Foundry SDX for Superior Drummer 2. It comes with three complete kits recorded by engineer/producer Forrester Savell. With credits on defining albums by bands like Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus and I Am Giant, Savell has shaped a few of the most sonically progressive productions in the modern Australian metal and heavy rock scene. The drums were captured at the Sing Sing Recording Studios in Melbourne, Australia. During its more than 35 years in business, the studio has collected a vast selection of top tier microphones and rare outboard gear. Combined with the dense wood-lined walls in its perfectly balanced A-room, Sing Sing has proven time and time again to be the perfect environment for broad, transparent drum recording. The drums, which were sampled by Karnivool’s own Steve Judd, include carefully selected kits from DW, Ludwig and Pearl.
