AraldFX offers a drum machine that takes its inspiration from many sources. It’s been said that old is the new new. This is especially true in the music industry, where instrument manufacturers indulge their nostalgic instincts with a steady stream of retro-inspired gear. While much of the emulative attention has been focused on old analogue synths and tube-laden outboard processors, there’s been no small demand for vintage drum machines. Indeed, the trusty Roland TR-808 may well have been the first ‘chic antique’ on the second-hand music tech market, while its successor, the TR-909, is equally desired, particularly by dance producers. Unfortunately, vintage instruments command lofty prices and an endless supply of patience. This being the case, drum synths (both hard and soft) have undergone a sort of resurrection in recent years.

The CA2600 is a powerful, self-contained duophonic synthesizer inspired by the groundbreaking ARP 2600 synthesizer. Every aspect of the original, from the quirky oscillator waves, to the powerful ladder filter, to the external audio input and preamp section was modeled with tremendous precision. Though it features similar functionality, it’s been thoughtfully updated for increased flexibility – with semi-normalled patch cabling, integrated effects, and no hidden windows or menus in the audio path, CA2600 delivers an unprecedented hands-on, “everything right in front of you, right now!,” vintage synthesis experience like no other.
Chromatix is a celebration of yet another successful resurrection of an old classic saved from the grave… This time it was a gorgeous 1983 Rhodes Chroma! After a very deep clean inside and out followed by a visual inspection it was quickly realised the original rather large and somewhat grizzly linear PSU had burnt out and was showing signs of several past repairs. News got round that a new cooler running switched mode PSU retrofit had been made available and was duly installed. Having returned power to the beast it quickly transpired that at least two voice cards had serious issues and were failing the dreaded auto-tune. This rapidly became a can of worms when it became apparent that almost all of the considerable number of analog multiplexors within the beast were practically dying in front of my eyes due to age and after the shock of being pressed back into action for the first time in several years. Following removal and replacement of some 40 or so unsocketed ICs much of the instrument returned to life leaving a final stubborn voice card really determined not to play ball. On discovery of a number of leaky transistor arrays and tired charge pump oscillators the final voice card eventually succumb to my continued harassment only to have a third voice card fail during soak testing!

The included sounds are inspired by genres like post-metal, sludge, prog-metal and alt-rock and are intended to have the punch to slice through the densest walls of guitars. There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can’t give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it. For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain ‘push’ to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff. Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours
