The original slab of Konkrete earned a five star review in SOS in September 2006. Back then, it snarled like an attitude-laden adolescent, its distinctive samples formed into 24 scratchy, glitchy, twitchy drum kits. Control was minimal but this didn’t stop it, and later Konkrete 2, which ran broadly along the same lines, from being equally ear-catching. For Konkrete 3, Soniccouture have upped the ante with a totally revamped interface and enhanced functionality. Most TR909 sample packs are unprocessed recordings using variations of the TR909s drum tunings and decays. Others are passively sampled through some kind of analog summing buss, a console, or recorded to analog tape. These are great and cover a lot of bases formusicians. However, the vast majority of records made with real TR909 drums have processing on them, sometimes huge amounts of EQ and compression have been used on the TR909 sounds. The great thing is, even with copious amounts of processing theTR909 doesn’t lose its character, on the contrary processing can seriously enhance a TR909 in all areas, and of course make itdangerously punchy! Processing can also make the TR909 deep, moody, and oozing with vibe!
